What matters now
- Solid but not exceptional quality (63/100) and above fair value, neither a clear bargain nor a standout compounder.
- A fairly wide model range ($154.80 to $391.82) leaves room in how you read the outcome.
- For a financial, book-value and earnings-based methods matter more than a cash-flow DCF, which fits banks and insurers poorly.

Analysis
American Express Company (AXP) currently trades at $329.82, while our model-based Fair Value estimate is $206.40, implying the stock looks roughly 59.8% overvalued today. The Quality Score stands at 63/100 (solid quality), in the Financial Services sector. Bull case: the Growth DCF group reads highest at a median of $292.96 per share, and 2 of the 13 models we run sit above the $329.82 price. Bear case: the Asset-Based group reads lowest at $32.87, and 11 of the 13 models stay below the price. Evidence for this calculation is high.
Over the trailing twelve months, American Express Company generated revenue of $68.8B at a net margin of 16.3%. Revenue grew 11.6% year over year. It earns a return on equity of 34.4%. Net debt stands at $10.1B. Fundamentals as of Aug 29, 2026
Our scenario range runs from $154.80 (bear case) to $391.82 (bull case); at $329.82, the current price sits within that range. Bear and bull are the same models run on conservative and optimistic assumptions (margins, growth, valuation multiples), so a plausible valuation range, not a price target. The share trades about 14% below its 52-week high and 16% above its 52-week low, currently below its 200-day average. For context, the median of 10 Financial Services peers we cover trades at −51% fair-value upside, at −37%, AXP screens cheaper than that median.
Fair Value models
This estimate rests on fiscal year 2025 figures, and about 8 months have passed since. In that time the company retained roughly $8.55 per share, which is 4.1 % of the fair value. The fair value deliberately does not add this in: the models value reported figures, not a projection.
Each model estimates fair value its own way; the Fair Value above is the evidence-weighted, family-balanced blend. Evidence (0–100) measures how completely this model’s inputs are available: well-fed models carry more weight in the blend. The spread across models is intentional, each one stresses a different value driver; dividend models, for instance, come out structurally low when payout is small. Every input is real reported data, nothing guessed.
All 13 models by family
Widest divergence: Growth DCF ($292.96) versus Asset-Based ($32.87). Highest evidence: Growth DCF (77).

Quality Score breakdown
Of which business quality 66 · Market factors (momentum, volatility) 52
Non-valuation factor families (profitability, growth, cashflow, financial strength, momentum …), each academically grounded. Valuation itself sits in the Fair Value and is deliberately excluded here to avoid double-counting.
All values are scores from 0 to 100 (100 = best against fixed, research-based bands), not percentages. The three market factors (momentum, 52-week proximity, low volatility) are displayed but carry zero weight in the headline number: market sentiment is not a business property.
